Women of colour-led teams like ours is crucial in the film industry, predominantly dominated by white men. Despite considerable advancements in diversity and inclusion efforts, the representation of Black, Brown and Muslim women in film remains severely underwhelming. According to recent statistics, Black and Brown women are vastly underrepresented, accounting for only a meager percentage of leading roles both on-screen and behind the scenes.
People of color account for roughly 22% of lead actors and 12% of writers. But women of color are severely underrepresented with only one credited writer for a top theatrical film in 2022. Studios overwhelmingly choose white male directors (73%) for theatrical releases.
Diversity in leadership isn't some feel-good nicety – it's a creative lifeline. Homogenous leadership breeds homogenous content. Our woman-led company shatters that mold. We bring fresh perspectives and lived experiences that enrich storytelling and broaden the industry's narrow viewpoint. It's not just the right thing to do, it's the smart way to break through the noise and forge genuine connections with a wider audience.
The audience is diverse, the filmmakers aren't.
